The Youth Basketball program is currently run every Sunday from 1 PM – 3:30 PM in the Baltimore Montissori Public Charter School. Students are taught basketball handling skills, shot fundamentals, passing, defense and team work concepts. GELP understands the importance and power of sports in its target community. We selected a coach and mentor that grew up in the East Baltimore Midway neighborhood, who survived the negative influences of neighborhood gangs, parental drug abuse and poverty through the sport of basketball. The opportunity to play basketball and the genuine care and concern of his coach saved his life and created a pathway for him to graduate high school, complete both his undergraduate and graduate education, land a job within the United Nations and travel to over 20 countries.
The goal of the GELP Youth Basketball program is to be a similar beacon of light and safe haven for its neighborhood youth by using their passion for the game to build self-esteem, a sense of belonging and to develop skills that will help them compete on the court and in life.
